Fungal Nail Infection: Care and Treatment

Beautiful Toes
Fungal infections are never easy to deal with. If you notice some discolorations on your toenails or your tape nails start developing a yellowish color, you may have a fungal infection. There are several methods to consider when dealing with them, and you should not wait for it to worsen or spread. Here are some effective ways to do so:

  • Hygiene. You’ll be surprised how important proper hygiene is to fighting these infections. Fungi thrive under wet and damp conditions, so if you regularly clean your feet and keep them dry they’ll soon disappear. See to it that your socks are always clean and keep your shoes as dry as possible. Also, avoid sharing shoes, nail clippers, nail files and socks.
  • Professional help. This involves visiting a physician who can administer either anti-fungal pills or anti-fungal topical medicines. In severe cases, the treatment can involve surgical or non-surgical nail removal.
  • Diet. One of the most important to maintain good health is eating wholesome foods. Wounds on the skin surface prime targets for fungal infections. Given the right conditions, fungi infect lesions, so it’s important to maintain a healthy diet to aid in the healing of wounds and generally boost the immune system.
  • Chronic conditions. If you’re prone to other chronic conditions like diabetes, managing them can be a major boost in the treatment of fungal nail infections.
  • Avoid nail injuries. Cutting your nails too short or using certain types of manicure can damage your nails, thereby making them more susceptible to nail infections.
